“This Campaign is a force - motivating and engaging people of all walks of life to address the common threat of Climate Change. If we don't do something about it now, the disastrous consequences will be felt by all of us within our lifetime.”
“Climate Change is real - and threatening the very existences of mountain communities like those of the Sherpas. When one walks in the Himalayas, the evidence is clear to see. Melting glaciers, eroded mountain slopes, winter droughts and summer floods are increasingly becoming problems for those who live in the region. The loss of homes and farmland, mountain paths and bridges, forestland and wildlife are putting more and more pressure on the unique indigenous communities who are trying to make a living in already some of the most inhospitable terrains on earth. As a mountaineer, I nearly lost my life on two different occasions - in a huge glacial collapse and a rock fall - owing to ever increasing temperatures and lack of snowfall respectively. Dawa Steven Sherpa receiving letter of appreciationWith the rapid melting of the glaciers, I realized that its not only us mountaineers who are at threat but also the local people who live directly downstream of newly formed glacial lakes that are known to burst out of the moraine dams and devastate everything in its path. On a larger scale, more than 1.3 billion in South Asia depend on the waters flowing from these very glaciers, the highest water towers in the world! In less than half a century all these glaciers will be gone and the water towers will be empty. The impact this will have is hard to comprehend and thus swept under the carpet.
I am very proud to have the opportunity to work with WWF on the Climate for Life campaign to draw the attention of the world to this burning issue. This Campaign is a force that is motivating and engaging people of all different walks of life to address this common threat. If we don't do something about it now, the disastrous consequences will be felt by all of us within our lifetime.”
