3 April - 21 May 2009
The Campaign will kick-off with a dramatic first event, which is to take WWF’s climate change message "STOP CLIMATE CHANGE – LET THE HIMALAYAS LIVE!" to the top of the world. Mr. Apa Sherpa, 18 times record-holding Everest Summiteer, will be holding this message at the Everest summit on his 19th ascent reminding the world of its responsibility towards saving the fragile Himalayas.

Who could have been a better person than Apa Sherpa to deliver this message to the world, having witnessed firsthand the changing landscape of the Himalayas in the wake of climate change during his years of mountaineering experience and having been a victim personally of its disastrous consequences?

Apa will be carrying the WWF Banner during the Eco Everest Expedition, led by 2-time Everest Summiteer Dawa Steven Sherpa, a passionate advocate of climate change issues and also a WWF Climate Witness. The expedition team leaves Kathmandu on 6 April 2009, and is scheduled to reach the summit the third week of May.

The efforts of Apa and WWF have also been blessed by the Venerable Rinpoche of Tengboche, Ngawang Tenzin Zangpo, who personally bestowed the responsibility to carry the Tendrel Nyesel Bumpa (Sacred Vase) containing 400 different sacred ingredients upon Apa to be installed at top of Mt. Everest. The Rinpoche being the most revered religious figure of the faith to which Apa belongs to, his blessings both for Apa’s 19th ascent and his commitment to carrying climate change message all the way to Everest, adds a huge significance to the event.
